From Garden Room to Growing Clinic: The Secret Garden Rooms’ Journey at Flexspace Kirkcaldy
When The Secret Garden Rooms first began in 2019, founder Carol had a simple vision: to create a small, welcoming treatment space where clients could receive a personal service from the comfort of a summer house in her garden.
At the time, there was no expectation that the business would grow into a busy clinic with a team of four. But as demand increased, The Secret Garden Rooms quickly outgrew its original home-based setup.
A move to Flexspace Kirkcaldy provided the business with the space, flexibility and professional environment it needed to take its next steps, eventually transforming a larger office into two private treatment rooms and a dedicated waiting area.
From a Garden Summer House to a Growing Business
The Secret Garden Rooms was founded in 2019, with the business initially operating entirely from a summer house in the founder’s garden.
The original setup worked well for a small, independent business, but circumstances soon created a need for a change. Significant renovations were planned at home, making it impractical to continue seeing clients alongside the noise and disruption.
The search began for a small external space that would allow The Secret Garden Rooms to continue operating.
Initially, the requirement was straightforward: somewhere suitable for one therapist, with the possibility of eventually allowing another therapist to use the room on the days it was available.
Moving away from working at home created an opportunity to do exactly that. Before long, another therapist joined the business, and the room was being used almost seven days a week.
The demand continued to grow.
Appointments were regularly booked weeks, and sometimes almost two months, in advance. It became clear that The Secret Garden Rooms had outgrown its original Flexspace room.
A Space Designed Around the Business
Rather than immediately moving elsewhere, the team explored whether a larger Flexspace unit could be adapted to suit the business.
That conversation led to a completely different approach.
The Secret Garden Rooms took on a larger office space and transformed it to create two private treatment rooms alongside a small waiting area, giving the business the dedicated environment it needed to accommodate more clients and grow its team.
The transformation allowed the business to expand again, and there are now four therapists working within The Secret Garden Rooms.
What began as one person working from a garden summer house has evolved into a busy clinic serving clients from across Fife and beyond.
“It has been quite surreal seeing the business go from one therapist working in a garden room to a busy clinic with a team, and having the flexibility to change and adapt our premises as the business has grown has been really important.”
Why Staying at Flexspace Made Sense
As the business grew, other premises were considered locally. However, several aspects of the Flexspace Kirkcaldy location made it particularly well suited to The Secret Garden Rooms.
The building provides a secure, professionally managed environment, while easy client parking, wheelchair access and an on-site café add convenience for both the team and visitors.
Location has also been particularly important.
Although The Secret Garden Rooms is based in Kirkcaldy, its clients travel from across Fife and much further afield, including Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Being close to the main road network makes the clinic straightforward to reach, helping clients travel to appointments without the inconvenience of navigating a difficult or inaccessible location.
The ability to adapt an existing office rather than start again somewhere else also meant the business could continue from a familiar base while creating a space that was much better suited to its growing needs.
Creating a Welcoming Environment for Clients
For a treatment business, the environment can be just as important as the service itself.
The newly transformed space provides private treatment rooms where clients can feel comfortable and relaxed, alongside a dedicated waiting area.
Moving from a garden-based treatment room to a purposefully arranged professional space has given The Secret Garden Rooms the opportunity to create an environment that reflects the experience it wants clients to have.
The result is a space that feels personal and welcoming while providing the privacy and professionalism expected from a growing clinic.
Flexibility That Supports Growth
For The Secret Garden Rooms, flexibility has been a key part of the business journey.
The company did not need to predict exactly how much space it would require several years into the future. Instead, it has been able to adapt its workspace as demand increased – first moving from home, then expanding into a larger unit and transforming that space around its requirements.
That flexibility has allowed the business to concentrate on its clients and team rather than being restricted by its premises.
And the journey may not be over yet.
“We are continuing to evolve, so I wouldn’t rule out needing an even bigger space again in the future!”

Looking Ahead
The Secret Garden Rooms’ story is a great example of how a business can evolve when its workspace evolves alongside it.

The flexibility to move into a larger space and adapt it to meet the needs of the business has played an important role in that journey.
